Philippine Drug and Poisons Board (PDPMB) has filed a petition to allow the PDPMB to remove from the drug list the generic drug "Viagra" (sildenafil citrate), a drug which was the subject of a lawsuit filed by the Philippine government in March 2014.
The petition is based on a complaint from the Philippine government that the PDPMB has made a drug-adverse drug recommendation to the Philippine Health Services (PHS) in the past year.
The complaint is the result of a public hearing and a consultation with the PDPMB on March 20, 2014.
The drug's label was revised on January 25, 2014.
The complaint alleges that PDPMB and the PHS were not informed that the generic drug "Viagra" could cause sexual activity, that there are no studies to support the use of sildenafil citrate in the treatment of ED, and that the drug may cause heart failure in some patients, and that men should avoid or limit the use of sildenafil citrate.
The PDPMB also alleges that the PDPMB has been asked by the PHS to consider whether the generic drug was safe.
The PDPMB alleges that, although the drug was available without a prescription, the PDPMB's analysis did not identify any drugs with side effects that are known to be related to Viagra. The PDPMB is seeking a finding of facts, which is not binding, and will be heard in due course.
The PDPMB also seeks that the PDPMB be prohibited from using the generic drug for recreational purposes.
The PDPMB's action is based on two grounds. First, it seeks to prohibit the use of Viagra on a population-based basis in the Philippines.
Second, the PDPMB's allegations of violations of the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance, as it relates to Viagra, are also based on the facts that Viagra is not approved by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FAPDA) and the PDPMB has not taken the drug to market and has not been contacted by the public.
The PDPMB is seeking to stop the use of Viagra and other drugs by the public and by PHS members who have used the drug. The PDPMB has also sought to prohibit the use of the generic drug in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In its petition to prohibit the use of Viagra, the PDPMB contends that the PDPMB has not informed PHS that the generic drug "Viagra" can cause ED, and that the PDPMB has not discussed the possibility of using the drug with any other medications.
The PDPMB's request for an order to stop the use of Viagra is not binding, as the FDA has not approved the drug to treat ED.

A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
